Understand GATE Exam
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a nationwide exam held collaboratively by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) located in Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee. This is done on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. The GATE Committee, composed of representatives from the administering institutes, is the sole authority responsible for overseeing the exam and announcing results.
For administrative purposes, examination cities in India are divided into eight zones. Each zone has a Zonal GATE office at the respective administrative Institute (IIT or IISc). GATE is an all-India entrance exam assessing candidates’ comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in Engineering/Technology/Architecture and postgraduate subjects in Science.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) jointly organize the GATE annually. It serves as the qualifying entrance exam for admission to postgraduate (PG) courses such as M.E, M.Tech, and Ph.D. in IISc and IITs. A valid GATE score is crucial for securing financial assistance during Master’s and direct Doctoral programs in engineering/technology/architecture.
As per the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) directives, the admission procedure for postgraduate programs with MHRD scholarship/assistantship involves either direct admission based solely on GATE performance or a combination of GATE performance, an admission test/interview, and academic record, depending on the institute’s or department’s norms.
If a test/interview is part of the selection process, GATE performance holds a minimum weightage of 70%, with the remaining 30% attributed to the candidate’s performance in the test/interview and/or academic record, following MHRD guidelines.

The Institution of Engineers (India) (IE). The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE). The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI). The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, Including Polymer and Environmental Group (IIChemE). The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) The Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIIE).
Candidates with certifications from professional societies need to make sure that the examinations conducted by these societies are approved by MoE/AICTE/UGC/UPSC as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch./B.Planning, etc.
For candidates obtaining or pursuing their qualifying degree outside India, they must currently be in the 3rd year or beyond or have completed a bachelor’s degree (with a minimum duration of 3 years) in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Science/Humanities.
Note:
If a candidate is pursuing or has already obtained a higher degree than mentioned in the eligibility criteria, they are still allowed to appear for the GATE 2024 Examination. Candidates with B.Sc./B.A./B.Com. degrees (3-year program) aiming for admission to Masters Programs in IITs and IISc should refer to JAM 2024.

Criteria For Candidates Who Have Obtained/Are Pursuing Their Qualifying Degree From Outside India
For candidates who have obtained or are pursuing their qualifying degree outside India, here are the eligibility criteria:
A candidate should have completed or be in the final year of their Bachelor’s degree (with a duration of at least 3 years) in Engineering/Technology. Alternatively, a candidate should have completed or be in the final year of their Post Graduate (Master’s) degree (with a duration of at least 2 years) in any relevant subjects in Science.
Documents Required for Eligibility
Candidates who have already passed the qualifying examinations should submit (upload) the necessary documents. These include the degree certificate, provisional certificate, course completion certificate, professional certificate, or membership certificate issued by the institute or society. If a candidate is expected to complete the qualifying examination, they should upload a Certificate from the Head of the Department/Institute or a copy of the mark sheet for Section A of AMIE. The certificate must bear the signature and seal of the Head of the Institute/Department with the current date.
GATE 2024 Papers And Corresponding Codes
The GATE exam covers 30 subjects (papers), and a candidate can choose to appear in either one or up to two test papers. It’s important to note that CE and ME may have multiple sessions. Additionally, a new subject, Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, has been introduced.

How to Apply For GATE Exam?
The GATE 2024 Exam Notification has been released by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. Online registration for the GATE 2024 exam will commence on August 24, 2023, and the last date for registration is September 29, 2023. Interested candidates are advised to carefully read the GATE Notification before initiating the online registration process.
IISc, Bengaluru, is set to conduct the GATE 2024 Entrance Exam, providing an opportunity for candidates to apply for admission to Master’s Degree Courses in 7 IITs and IISc. Here’s how to apply:
Register and fill out the application form online through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS). The link will be available on the GATE 2024 website starting from August 24, 2023.
The entire application process, including uploading certificates/documents, will be conducted online. Candidates should refrain from sending hard copies of their application form/documents to IISc or any of the zonal GATE Offices.
Register by providing a valid email ID, mobile number, and choosing a password.
